Internet of Things | How it Works?

What is Internet of Things?

Complex Chips and sensors are embedded in physical things that surround us, each transmitting valuable data. Data that understand how these things work and work together. It is the common Internet of Things platform that brings us together which provides communications between devices and apps. In simple words, Internet of Things is a Smart way in which devices talk to each other for a better functionality.

The process starts with the devices themselves which communicate with the internet of things platform. This platform collects data from many such devices and applies analytics to share the most valuable data with applications that address industries specific needs.

Let's take a simple example: A Computer

After using a computer for more than a year Raj notices that his computer needs to be checked by an engineer as one of the RAM of his computer has stopped working. Raj does not know whether the fault is minor or major. As it turns out, the contact pins of the RAM socket have rusted due to the moisture in the air. The overall monitoring sensor sends Raj a message about an immediate check up of the computer. This sensor is one of the sensors that are constantly communicating with each other. A component called Diagnosticbus gathers the data from all these sensors and passes it to a gateway in the computer. The gateway sorts the data from the sensors, the gateway passes only most diagnostic information will be transmitted to the manufacturer's platform.

Before sending this organized data the computer's gateway and platform must first register with each other and confirm a secure communication. The platform is constantly gathering and storing thousands of bits of information from Raj's computer & hundred's of computers like his. The manufacturer added rules and logic to the platform so when Raj's computer sends a signal that his RAM has stopped working, the platform triggers an alert on his computer.

The manufacturer also uses the platform to create and manage applications that solve such issues. In this case, the manufacturer can design an application on the platform. This application sends an appointment message to Raj, directions to the nearest certified dealer. So that Raj can solve his problem immediately.

In this way, Raj would be helped by his own computer for its defect due to the Internet of Things platform. And for Raj, it means that he can work in his computer safely. All credits to the Internet of Things.

By now you must have come to know what is Internet of Things and how it works. If you liked the post hit that G+1 button & if you have any suggestions do mention it in the comments section.
