WiTricity - Wireless Electricity



"WiTricity" in simple words is Wireless Electricity.


Wouldn't it be great if we are able to send electricity wirelessly, surely it would.



Wireless Electricity

It refers to the devices and processes which employ wireless energy transfer through a resonant inductive coupling.



Back to the 1800s...

In the year 1893, Nikola Tesla proposed the method of wireless transmission of electric power. One of the greatest breakthrough in the science of that time. Tesla enlightened 200 lamps at a distance of 40 km. But only 15% efficiency was achieved.


How does it work?




  1. Two copper coils of large diameter.
  2. The Transmitter coil is attached to a power source.
  3. The receiver coil is placed about 5-6 feet away from the transmitter coil.
  4. This receiver coil is attached to a bulb/load.
  5. The two coils are tuned to the same frequency.

Then power is switched ON, which energizes the transmitter coil. Electric energy can be transmitted over a distance of 3-4 meter with maximum efficiency. With each cycle more and more energy and voltage builds up in the coil till the accumulation of voltage provides enough voltage and energy to flow to the light bulb. This System can work despite Non- Conducting/insulating material is placed in between the coils. Except for metals. It works on AC (Alternating Current) current. The losses in this system are minimum.









This is a very interesting concept. Wireless charging is a very old concept which we see in today's mobile phones. But it is not a 100% wireless changing method. As we have to place the phone on the charging pad in a particular orientation. Company's like Intel, TOYOTA have already taken the license for this concept. Upcoming days will have wireless charging in cars which would be charged when parked on the device or while running on the road.








These charging systems are growing nowadays. It is rumored that Iphone's next version will have completely wireless charging up to 15 feet. If we use resonant repeaters after certain intervals the range can be increased. 


ADVANTAGES

  1. Safe, good range.
  2. No need for power cables and batteries.
  3. Boon for devices which use midrange power.

DISADVANTAGES

  1. Cannot penetrate through Metal wall.
  2. Transmission possible only up to few meters.



APPLICATIONS

  1. Transportations
  2. Consumer Electronics.
  3. Medical devices.
  4. Robots.
  5. Military.
